Chapter 34

People:

  • Jane:cousin of Mary, Diana, and St John, teacher
  • Hannah:helps around the house
  • Mary:governess, comes to visit her family
  • Diana:governess, comes to visit her family
  • St Johns: pastor, wants to marry Jane
Why is there conflict between Jane and St Johns?
-Jane values love while St John values serving his lord.

Places:
  • Moor House
    • Jane prepares for Diana and Mary's return to the house.
    • It is Christmas and when Diana and Mary come back home, they all spend quality time together.
  • Outside of Moor House
    • St. John tells Jane about his plan to go to India.
    • He asks her to marry him because she was meant to be a clergyman's wife unlike Miss Oliver although Jane refuses.
    • St. John insists that they go to India together as a married couple but Jane still remains persistent with her decision.

Summary:
After having split her inheritance, Jane spends the holidays with her new found cousins. She leaves the school there afterwards and returns to moor house to prepare for her cousins arrival. The cleaning was gratifying to her , and was acknowledged by everyone except St. John. He remains detached from the group especially after Rosemonde had fount a new suitor. During the holiday St. John begins to teach Hindustani to Jane, when originally she was trying to learn german. Jane feels the depererate need to always please him and listen to what he says. When he proposes she should marry him dn go with him to india, she declines, saying she would only go with someone as their sibling. He takes this reported  as an act against god and storms out.

St. John can also be considered a vampire because he drains Jane of her individuality and replaces it with the a-typical missionary's wife. He is ignorant to other interpretations and continues in his way. When he cannot use Jane anymore, he separates himself entirely

Personal Reaction:
  1. How do you react to St. John being so cold and hard towards Jane?

  • I think St. John really does have feelings for Jane but is just hiding it. Maybe he is playing hard to get with her that is why he did not really react to the renovation she has done to to the house. In addition, St. John does give her attention and ask her to learn the language he will be speaking in India.
  • I think it is because he has not experienced love in the way Jane has.  I think if he had, St John would be a warm character. (Nicole)

    2.  React and respond to St. John asking Jane to marry him.

  • I find it a bit disturbing that he would do that because they are cousins but these are the old times and I think it is normal back then but it was a great shock that it occurred. My hypothesis that St. John has feelings for Jane might be true. He states it is for a good cause but he insists that she must and is angered that she will not agree so I still believe he has some feelings for her.
  • I thought it was a surprise.  I thought it was disturbing since he really did not love her.  He thought it should be done because it was a necessity. (Nicole)
