Chapter 15

People:

      • Celine Varens
Describe the character that Celine seems to possess.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            • W-well, it would be thought that Celine was a very beautiful woman in order to have possessed such a man as Mr. Rochester to the point where he provided her with vast riches. Although Mr. Rochester claims their love was mutual, I think it may have been more deep on his part as Celine seems to be a sort of selfish, feeble-minded woman considering she so easily fleeting from being in love with Mr. Rochester, to cheating with an officer and finally running off with a musician. By the way that she simply abandoned her only daughter, it is safe to say that she has a lack of responsibility and judgement.

Places:

In Jane’s Room:  In Jane’s room, she reviews past events.  She is quite comfortable in her room.
Rochester’s Room:  His room was on fire.  It has a sense of danger and insecurity to it.

Vocabulary:
  1. "an unnecessary encumbrance, by the by,on so warm a June evening" Encumbrance: a burden or impediment.
  2. "and lines of dark windows reflecting that metal welkin" Welkin: literary, the sky or heaven.
  3. "and then she wrote in the air a memento" Memento: an object kept as a reminder or souvenir.
  4. "Now it had been her custom to launch out into fervent admiration of what she called my 'beaute male'" Fervent: having or displaying a passionate intensity.
  5. "left a bullet in one of his poor etiolated arms" Etiolated: (of a plant) pale and drawn out due to a lack of light.
  6. "because i heard him fulminating strange anathemas at finding himself lying in a pool of water" Fulminating: express vehement protest.
  7. "Sense would resist delirium: judgment would warn passion. Delirium: an acutely disturbed state of mind that occurs in fever, intoxication, and other disorders.
  8. "After this digression he proceeded" Digression: a temporary departure from the main subject in speech or writing.
  9. "wherein she differed diametrically from you, who told me point-blank" Diametrically: (with reference to opposition) completely, directly.

Personal Reaction
1.)Rochester continues to deny that little Adele is his daughter, though he cares for her as if she was his own, and his relationship with her mother is additional Evidence? What can you speculate about this? Is Adele his child or not?

  • I do not know if Adele is his child.  She might be.  This would explain why it is that she is in his care.  However, Mr. Rochester may have taken her under his wing since he has known her and her mother for a long time.  He might be doing that as a favor. (Nicole)
  • (Ryan): I truly believe Adele is one of Mr. Rochester's own child because if it wasnt, why would he care so much for the little one. The other conclusion i have came up with is maybe he just cares for her a lot because he card for her mother much too.
2.)The Suspicious laughter from "Grace Poole" (so it is believed to be) adds an additional eeriness to the novel,  why do you think the author added this to his Gothic romance, and does it echo anything of the characters actions

  • I think the laughter represents a mystery that is waiting to be unravelled.  I cannot say much about it since not much is revealed.  I think the laughter will later be addressed in the novel. (Nicole)
  • (Ryan): Grace Poole was just added to further create the mood Gothic romance usually creates. Grace Poole is a strange and ambiguous character and the story will eventually tell us the story about her.
