Places:
Thornfield Gardens

Beautiful midsummer evening. The story puts into detail the lighting and the splendor of nature around the garden, Spring is in full swing and it reflects the events that are  happening in the garden. Butterflies and birds gently fly around while Adele plays and Mr. Rochester discusses intimate subject with Jane. After the proposal, things take a change. It begins to rain and the tree is struck with lightning. This scene foreshadows the relationships future, it would appear happy and beautiful, until it is struck down by an unexpected occrance.

Summary:
  • Jane has totally fallen in love with Mr. Rochester and likewise for him as well. One day while Jane and Mr. Rochester are at the garden conversing for a long time, Rochester mentions to Jane that she must leave soon due to his marriage. Jane finally tells Mr. Rochester how much she loves him and he does the same and proposes to her; she agrees. When the two goes inside and Rochester kiss Jane numerous times, Mrs. Fairfax witnesses it and is shocked.
  • Professor's Interpretation: The marriage of Jane and Rochester appears to be one that will fail. It is ironic that after he proposes rain and lightning strikes the night. The fact that it started raining and more importantly thunder occurring foreshadows that this relationship between the two will now work out very well. According to the professor, this type of weather shows negative results.
Personal Reaction:

  1. What do you think of Mr. Rochester's deceiving Jane about intending to marry Blanche?
    • I think it shows that although he may be superior and more educated than Jane, he still has his insecurities. He was unwilling to express his feelings without being sure that they would be returned. However, it does seems as if Rochester is simply patronizing and playing with Jane's emotions.  (Gloria)
    • I thought it was cruel of Mr Rochester. He was toying with Jane.  He was making her emotional.  He purposely wanted to make Jane jealous.  (Nicole)
  2. What can be foreshadowed by the storm that occurs after Rochester proposes to Jane?
    • The storm foreshadows that some obvious problems will occur with the engagement. Also, the splitting of the orchard by the lighting reveals that something may happen that will cause the separation of Jane and Rochester.  (Gloria)
    • It can foreshadow there is trouble due to the acceptance of the proposal.  It is as if God is displaying his wrath because he opposes the marriage.  There is something inappropriate about it. (Nicole)
