Places:
Whitcross -> First place that she arrives to after being dropped off by the carriage. It is a new start for her, and being it spring, with the beautiful moors in the background, it is a good one.
Forest in whitcross: Must stay in the forest for the night surrounded by nature and eating what mother earth has given. After this setting everything is refreshed, and she now has th energy to go on rather than the sorrow.
Bakery -> Showed how desperate she was, though she was very nicely dressed, she felt like an outcast  wandering through the village. The Smell of the bread slowly tortures her as she is refused a small morsel
Moor house -> the light leads her to the perfect people to help her. She loves this home and constantly compliments what its beauty would be with a liitle care.

Summary:
  • After abandoning Thornfield, Jane finds herself at Whitcross where she struggles to find shelter and starves and begs for food because she has no money to pay for anything. One night she sees and light in the hills and follows it, upon reaching it she sees Mary and Diana conversing while a servant name Hannah knits. Jane knocks and Hannah answers but does not let her in and she thinks she will die but a man name St. John comes to the door and lets her in. They decide to let her stay and feed her because she appears to be feeble and ill, but Jane uses a false name under Jane Elliot.  My professor interpretation deals with the first chapter called "Every trip is a Quest (except when it's not)". Jane agonizing experiences and struggles after leaving Thornfield and ending up in Whitcross is just another quest she takes that's an obstacle in life. One of the characteristics of this chapter is challenges and trials and she is challenged in this chapter and another characteristics of the chapter is the real reason is always self-knowledge. I believe after this quest, she will finally become one with herself and realize what she wants to do with herself, kind of like reaching nirvana.
Personal Reactions:

  1. How do you think living as a beggar will affect Jane?
    • I think having had to beg for food and for work will make Jane ever more humble. She will realize how well off her life actually was despite the hardships she endure as none were nearly as bad as what she is currently experiencing. However, this may also lead her to become apprehensive to good things that may happen to her in the future.  (Gloria)
    • It will make her humbler. She has not had much alone time.  I think it will give her time for reflection on her values. (Nicole)
  2. Do you think the Rivers family will help out Jane for long?
    • Yes I think they will take Jane in especially considering how Christian St. John is. I think the Moor House will be another stage in Jane's life where she will learn more about herself and what she truly wants in life. Living with a new family will also provide Jane with a different perspective on things.  (Gloria)
    • I think they will be of great help.  Mr Rivers seems like he cares about his faith.  I think taking her in would be for him charity work in the eyes of God.  It think that is how he views it.   I am unsure if it will be a long time though since they do not seem wealthy enough to take in another person. (Nicole)
