Describe the kind of marriage Mr. Rochester has with Bertha and why is it like this?
-Mr. Rochester despises and hates his marriage to Bertha with a passion. If he could i truly believe he would divorce her. He is sickened to have her as his wife. He feels so strongly about this on a count that Bertha is a mad and crazy woman. She has put Mr. Rochester through a lot and he has endured much from his crazy wife.
From this point on how do you think Mr. Rochester's and Jane's relationship will be? Will they eventually marry again?
-Jane and Rochester will still be in love with each other but i do not think the marriage will ever happen because of the stipulations and because Jane will be too bitter to ever let it happen or give it a chance again. Also, Jane might go through with her initial plan of leaving Thornfield due to the pain she has gone through and endured with Rochester's secret being revealed.
Places:
- Thornfield
- Church
- What is revealed of Mr. Rochester while he and Jane are about to be married at the church?
- It is discovered that Mr. Rochester has and still is married. Mason, along with a lawyer, stop the wedding on the basis that Mr. Rochester is married to Mason's sister who is currently living at Thornfield. Rochester attempts to overlook the accusation but realizes it is impossible and sets out to uncover his hidden secret.
- It is revealed that he is married already. It is revealed that he does not love his wife. It is also revealed that she lives with him. (Nicole)
- How has Thornfield changed Jane's life and what she thinks?
- Thornfield is no longer a safe haven for Jane as she discovers the dark secret of her love. She is exposed to the monstrosity of Rochester's wife. This also proves to be the same women that entered her room the night before. Jane realizes that she now truly has nothing now that all of her prospects are gone. As much as it pains her, she knows that she must leave Thornfield.
- She loves it because her friends live there. However, she is devastated because she feels she can never marry its owner. (Nicole)
Summary:
- Jane prepares and goes to the church with Mr. Rochester to be married. During the wedding ceremony, they are interrupted by Mr. Mason. He says Mr. Rochester is unable to be wed since he already is married. He produces documentation to prove Mr. Rochester is married. Mr. Rochester is upset by the interference. He admits that he has been a married man for fifteen years. He leads the group to Thornfield to meet Mrs. Bertha Rochester who is hidden is a secret room on the third story. After exiting, Bertha’s room, Mr. Mason tells Jane that he learned about the wedding ceremony through her uncle telling him about her letter. Jane is in shock from the day’s events. She retires to her room.
Personal Reaction:
- What do you think? Should Jane leave Thornfield after everything that has happened or should she stay?
- I think that she should not leave Thornfield because it is obvious that Rochester loved her. Even if he was married to Bertha, they do not act like a married couple. They can continue to be together if it was easy for Rochester to keep Bertha concealed in the first place. But I believe that Jane had felt betrayed at this point. She had the previous mindset not to trust others because she knows that she would, at some point, be disappointed by them and now that she had opened herself up to Rochester, she feels regretful. (Monica)
- I think she should have left. I think she would have been miserable in Thornfield. I think it would be a danger if he continued to live there since Bertha is escaping more frequently. (Nicole)
- Was it right for Rochester to keep Bertha a secret from everyone?
- It was not right for Rochester to keep Bertha a secret however, I do understand that he was scared of what others may think, especially Jane. It was revealed earlier in the novel that he was constantly travelling Europe and that he was hardly home, probably because he was tricked into marrying someone he did not really love. His frustation forced him to keep this a secret from everyone and when he had met Jane, he did not know what to do. He knew that there was a possiblity that Jane would be scared away by this bit of information so he kept it concealed. However, his plan backfired and ended up being revealed anyway. Poor Mr. Rochester ): (Monica)
- I think it was inappropriate. I do not think it was fair that she was shut in a room without fresh air. I think it was absolutely horrible that he lied to Jane when she was so willing to make vows to marry him.(Nicole)
