Chapter 17

People
The list is a hefty one due to the  arrival of Rochester's party:
  • Mrs. Fairfax
  • Grace Poole
  • Leah
  • Adele
  • Mr.Rochester
  • Mrs. Easton
  • Amy Easton
  • Luisa Easton
  • Lady Lynn
  • Colonel Dent
  • Mrs. Colonel Dent
  • Lady Ingram
  • Blanche Ingram
  • Mary Ingram
  • Signior Eduardo
After Jane's close encounter with Mr. Rochester she feels a close kinship with him and anticipates that their relationship will go much farther. By having This large multitude of people arrive at Thornfield Jane is formally introduced to the world that Rochester wants to belong to. Accustomed to solidarity and plain clothing, Jane feels like a greater outcast among this group, and for  the reader it appears like an allusion to her days with the  Reeds.

Places:
  • Thornfield
  1. Distinguish Thornfield when Mr. Rochester is present and when he is gone.
The mansion appears to be much more lively and cheery when he is present. There is more communication going on, but when he is gone the mansion for the most part appears to be silent and dead. Although when Mr. Rochester is gone, it seems like the mansion is peaceful and calm but when he is there, something unwanted occurs. Maybe there is a reason Mr. Rochester is always away from Thornfield.
  1. Why is it that Jane is once again excluded in the drawing room?
My answer to this is going to be a bit of risk-taking. I'm not quite sure if a drawing room here is a room where people draw but here goes nothing. In order to draw you must take chances and have some creativity, unfortunately Jane excludes herself and plays it safe. She does not want to take any chances in getting to know these people because she feels intimidated  by them. Even when Mr. Rochester tries to get her involved, she once again crawls into the window seat in her own world like in the Reed's mansion.

Summary:
  • Jane begins to become anxious as she is awaiting Mr. Rochester's return. Mrs. Fairfax is not so worried as she tells Jane that it would not be uncommon if he were to leave the continent again and not come back to Thornfield for a year. The thought of this makes Jane's heart ache. Luckily, it is found out that Mr. Rochester will be returning to Thornfield with a group of guests. Jane's suspicions of Grace have not yet subsided as she becomes aware that Grace is paid more than any of the other servants and has yet to find out why. When Mr. Rochester and his guests arrive, Jane is made to join the party in the drawing room. However, Blanche and her mother treat Jane with so rudely and horribly that she leaves just before she is about to cry. Mr. Rochester catches her berfore she leaves and sees that she is hurt and allows her to leave. However, he informs her that she will have to join the party every evening in the drawing room. As he is biding her goodnight, he almost lets a word of endearment slip out. Blanche could be a vampire figure as she is not only beautiful, but is also cruel to Jane wherein she is taking away her vitality and youth. She appears rich and lavished where in actuality she is unhappy with her life and she has yet to be married.

Personal Reaction:

1.)How does Miss Ingram's personality contrast from Jane's?

  • Miss Ingram views herself as superior.  She is self-absorbed.  She displays wealth, beauty, and talent.  She is the center of attention.  Jane is inferior to Rochester's company.  She has a caring nature towards Rochester.  She is not as wealthy and beautiful as Miss Ingram.  She hides in the shadows of the company. (Nicole)
  • (Ryan): Miss Ingram is the opposite of what Jane Eyre's characteristics would be. Miss Ingram is rich, selfish, and full of herself. She is condescending and not humble unlike Jane who treats everyone the same. Miss Ingram might be rich with materialism but Jane is rich with personality.

2.) Why was Jane moved at the end of the chapter?

  • She recognizes the relationship between Miss Ingram and Mr. Rochester.  She believes Miss Ingram is more attracting than herself.  She is disappointed since she has feelings towards Mr. Rochester.  When Rochester talks to her she becomes emotional.  (Nicole)
  • (Ryan): Jane was moved by the end of the chapter because Mr. Rochester nailed it on the spot and she could not hold it in any longer.  Her feelings for him has just grown stronger and with the possibility of Blanche taking him away from her, hurts her emotionally.
