Chapter 31

People:
  • Rosamond Oliver
Do you think eventually Jane will perceive her occupation differently after feeling degraded at first just like St. John?
-Jane has strong faith and belief in her God, so there is a strong possibility that the same might happen. Jane has always been a good teacher and appears to like teaching so I think she will eventually like this job teaching these kids even though she feels degraded. I see several similarities between Jane and St. John,
Do you think St. John and Jane will have some kind of relationship sometime in the future? And if so do -you think Rosamond Oliver will serve as a foil just like Blanche was?
St. John seems to like Jane but does not show it, he might be interested in her. On the other hand, Jane is still in love with Rochester but St. John might be the character that helps her overcome her feelings for Rochester. There is a strong possibility that the two will develop something. Also, if this does happen, Rosamond seems like she would be a foal because Oliver looks like she has feelings for St. John.
Places:

  • Jane's Cottage
  1. How does Jane's new place of residence make her feel?
    • Jane's new home makes her feel unbelievably sad. After her first day of teaching, she feels as if she has been drastically degraded in contrast with her previous student, Adele. Jane's cottage is also rather scarce and adds to her feeling of emptiness at Morton. However, she is surprised by Miss Oliver's beauty and St. John's response to her which may provide her with some intrigue and interest in Morton.

Summary:

  • Jane moves to the cottage that is provided to her by Rosamond.  St John comes and visits her.  They discuss his dedication to serving his lord.  Rosamond interrupts the conversation between Jane and St John.  Through observation, Jane believes they are attracted to each other.  She thinks it is St John’s attitude towards his faith which prevents them to have a relationship.  He prefers labor over love.

Personal Reaction:
  • Do you think that Jane sees Miss Oliver as another Blanche Ingram figure?
    • I think that it is a possibility although it is not stated. Jane observes Miss Oliver how she did with Blanche and saw that she was strikingly beautiful. Once again, Jane does an intenal comparison with herself and another woman. (Monica)
    • I think she is like Blanche is a way.  They are both admired characters for their beauty.  They are also wealthy, influential women.(Nicole)
  • Why does St. John seem to resist himself from Miss Oliver?
    • I believe that because he is a clergyman, he feels that he must resist temptation from women. His religious beliefs prevent him from loving a woman. (Monica)
    • He thinks living with her would be a sin.  He does not view the marriage as a service to God.  (Nicole)
